Explore wild mountains and unspoilt valleys
Trekking
In Papua New Guinea

Papua New Guinea is a paradise for trekkers in search of authentic adventure. From the Central Highlands, peaking at over 4,500 metres, to the secret trails of the Bismarck Range, each trek immerses you in spectacular scenery and unforgettable encounters with mountain peoples.

Far from the well-trodden paths and comfortable refuges, trekking in Papua is a real adventure, where you walk from village to village, welcomed by local communities who share their daily lives and ancestral traditions. It’s a total immersion in an unspoilt world, where nature still reigns supreme.

Our Trekking Destinations

Mount Wilhelm

Papua’s highest point at 4,509 metres above sea level. This mythical ascent takes you through different levels of vegetation, from rainforest to alpine meadows. On a clear day, you can see both oceans from the summit. A demanding but unforgettable trek, usually completed in 4 to 5 days.

Bismarck Range

Spectacular crossing of the mountain range that separates the Sepik Highlands. This 5-7 day trek takes you from village to village (Simbai, Fundum, Juke, Tsendiap, Waim) through landscapes of rugged mountains and deep valleys. Authentic encounters with the Kalam people and total immersion guaranteed.

Kokoda Track

The historic World War II trail, scene of decisive battles between Australians and Japanese. This 96-kilometer trek crosses the Owen Stanley Range through dense jungle. A physical and historical adventure that requires good physical condition and can be completed in 8 to 10 days.

What makes our treks unique

🏘️ Village Immersion

Unlike conventional treks, we prefer to spend nights in local villages rather than in isolated camps. You’ll share the daily life of families, take part in traditional ceremonies (mumu, sing-sing) and discover the legendary hospitality of mountain peoples. Every evening becomes a unique cultural experience.

👥 Expert Local Guides

Our guides come from the villages you pass through. They know every trail, every medicinal plant, every story. They are your cultural bridge, translating not only the language but also social codes and traditions. Their presence guarantees your safety and enriches your experience.

🌿 Nature Preserved

You walk through primary rainforests, where biodiversity explodes with every step. Giant orchids, birds of paradise, tree kangaroos, butterflies in unreal colors… Papua’s flora and fauna are among the richest on the planet. Our naturalist guides will help you observe and understand this exceptional ecosystem.

⚖️ Fair approach

Each trek generates direct income for the villages we visit: porters, cooks, accommodation, local guides. Your presence supports the local economy and promotes traditional knowledge. It’s a trek with meaning, beyond the sporting feat.

Physical level: Our treks can be adapted to different levels of fitness, from moderate (4-6h walking/day) to sporty (8-10h walking/day with steep gradients). We tailor each itinerary to your physical condition and expectations.

  • Comfortable backpack (30-40L)
  • Breathable, windproof clothing
  • Polar fleece and warm jacket for altitude
  • Sleeping bag (supplied if necessary)

🏔️ Best Period

The dry season from May to October is ideal for trekking. Trails are less muddy and views are clearer. However, in the tropical mountains, you can always expect a few showers!

💪 Physical preparation

You need to be in good physical condition. Prepare yourself with regular hikes 2 to 3 months before departure. Altitude and humidity require gradual adaptation.

Trekking in Papua has nothing to do with the commercial treks of other destinations. Here, you walk ancestral trails, sleep in traditional houses, share meals with your hosts. It’s physically demanding, but the human enrichment is unparalleled. Each step brings you closer to a world that few have the chance to experience.
