Why dive in Papua?

🐠 Biodiversity Record

Papua New Guinea lies at the heart of the Coral Triangle, the richest area of marine biodiversity on the planet. There are over 600 species of coral (75% of the world’s) and over 2,000 species of fish. Each dive reveals creatures you won’t see anywhere else.

🏛️ Historic wrecks

Papua was a major theater of the Second World War. The seabed is home to dozens of Japanese and Alliedship and aircraft wrecks, now colonized by coral and transformed into artificial reefs teeming with life. Diving these wrecks is to combine history and nature.

👁️ Exceptional visibility

Papua’s waters regularly offer visibility of 30 to 40 meters, sometimes more. Nutrient-rich currents feed the reefs without disturbing the water, creating ideal diving conditions all year round. Underwater photographers are in heaven!

🌴 Preserved sites

Unlike other popular destinations, Papua’s dive sites remain unspoilt and uncrowded. You often dive alone, in a pristine environment where coral is intact and fauna abundant. A luxury that has become rare in the diving world.

All levels welcome: Our partner centers welcome beginners (baptisms and training courses) as well as experienced divers (technical dives, nitrox, rebreathers). Instructors are internationally certified and speak English.

Types of Diving

🪸 Reef Diving

Papua’s coral reefs are among the most beautiful and healthy on the planet. Gardens of soft corals rippling in the current, spectacular hard coral formations, schools of tropical fish by the thousands… A permanent spectacle of color and life.

🦈 Pelagic Diving

The drop-offs and passes attract large pelagics: grey sharks, hammerheads, manta rays, tunas, barracudas, trevallies… Drift dives in the currents offer spectacular encounters with the fauna of the open sea.

🔍 Macro & Muck Diving

For lovers of extraordinary small creatures, Tufi and certain Kimbe sites offer exceptional macro dives. Rare nudibranchs, psychedelic frogfish, pygmy seahorses, harlequin shrimps… A fascinating world for photographers.

Diving in Papua is possible all year round, thanks to constant temperatures (28-30°C). The dry season (May to October) generally offers better visibility, but each season has its advantages depending on the sites and species to be observed.
