Papua New Guinea is a birdwatcher’s paradise. With 43 species of birds of paradise, including 38 endemics, over 780 bird species in total and exceptional avian biodiversity, this country offers unique birdwatching opportunities in unspoilt environments. <\/p>\n\n

From lowland rainforests to the alpine meadows of Mount Wilhelm, each ecosystem is home to its own emblematic species. Watching a male bird of paradise perform his courtship ritual in the canopy is an unforgettable experience, one of the most extraordinary natural spectacles on the planet. <\/p>\n\n

Birds of Paradise<\/h2>\n\n

Birds of Paradise are the undisputed stars of Papuan avifauna. With their spectacular plumage and extraordinary courtship displays, these birds have fascinated naturalists ever since they were first discovered. Each species has its own colors, dances and songs. <\/p>\n\n

Raggiana<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

Papua’s national bird<\/strong>, recognizable by its spectacular long orange feathers. The males gather in leks (courtship arenas), where they compete in beauty to seduce the females. It’s a fascinating sight, particularly near Port Moresby and in the Highlands. <\/p>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n

Kumul<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

Another local name for certain species of birds of paradise. The Kumul Lodge<\/strong> near Mount Hagen is specially designed for birdwatching, with specially equipped blinds enabling you to photograph the birds from just a few meters away, in exceptional conditions. <\/p>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n

Paradisier superbe, Paradisier du Roi de Saxe, Paradisier de Wilson… Each species has unique characteristics. Some have iridescent feathers, others acrobatic dances, still others melodious songs. The diversity is staggering. <\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n\n

The most accessible national park for birdwatching. Ideal for a first approach<\/strong> or a short extension. Well-maintained trails wind through the rainforest where the Raggiana perform their morning parades. Early morning birdwatching with specialized guides. <\/p>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n

\u26f0\ufe0f Rondon Ridge<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

Location:<\/strong> Mount Hagen, Highlands
Altitude:<\/strong> 2,100 metres
Specialities:<\/strong> Panoramic views, mountain birds<\/p>\n\n\n\n

A charming lodge perched on a ridge with spectacular views<\/strong> over the Wahgi valley. Excellent for combining comfort with birdwatching. The lodge’s gardens attract many species, and guided excursions allow you to explore the surrounding forests in search of rare species. <\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n\r\n

Best time to visit:<\/strong> Birds of paradise parade mainly during the dry season (May to October), with peak activity in July and August. The mornings are the most propitious times, when the males perform their spectacular courtship displays. <\/p>\n<\/div>\r\n\n

Beyond the Birds of Paradise<\/h2>\n\n

Papua is home to many species of colorful parrots, including the world’s smallest parrot<\/strong> (Micropsitta pusio, 8 cm). Lorises, cockatoos, parakeets… The colors and calls of the rainforests. <\/p>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n

\ud83d\udd4a\ufe0f Giant Pigeons<\/h4>\n\n\n\n

The Goura<\/strong>, or crowned pigeon, is the largest pigeon in the world. With its elegant crown of feathers and impressive size, it is an emblematic bird of lowland forests. <\/p>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n
